How zones set your rate

For most USPS services, price comes from three things: the service, the package's weight and size, and the zone. Zone is the distance between the origin and destination ZIP, bucketed into eight bands. Flat Rate is the exception — it ignores zones entirely.

This map computes zones from great-circle distance between ZIP-area centroids. That matches the published bands and is right for planning, but USPS defines the official zone per origin/destination prefix pair, so a few prefixes near a band edge can differ by one zone. Quote from the official chart before you price a rate card.
